BEWARE OF CHEAP IMITATIONS!
Many grades of turf are available today.   Cheapest of all are the meadow and pasture types.   You will find them advertised in gardening columns of local newspapers.   They are usually produced by cutting farmers fields very short and spraying with weed killer.

This kind of turf will never produce a good lawn.   All you can say about this kind of turf is that 'it's cheap, it's green and it's grass'!   However, farmers fields contain grass varieties that have been developed for rapid growth to feed cows and sheep, which is obviously not desirable, unless of course, you enjoy cutting grass 2-3 times per week, especially in wet weather.

Rolawn® turf is not the cheapest, just the best value, when supplied by Tommy Topsoil

What most gardeners are looking for is a professionally produced cultivated turf with varieties of grass that are slow growing, hard wearing and that look good.   Obviously, Rolawn® turf does cost just a little more than pasture/meadow turf, but if you think about it, you could be enjoying your lawn for 20 years or more - put in that context, the bit extra you pay in the beginning will repay itself many times over.   Rolawn® turf is grown in East Yorkshire on large flat fields that have very sandy soil, which is the perfect combination for producing high quality turf at the lowest possible price.   Tommy Topsoil only supply Rolawn® top grade turf, which is suitable for both front and rear lawns.

Instructions for Preparation & Laying

It is important to remember that turf is a living product.
To avoid loss of turf, it is vital that turf is laid within 12-24 hours (max) of receipt.

Preparation for laying Rolawn® Turf
First remove any vegetation and large stones, then cultivate to a depth of at least 4" (100mm).   If the soil is poor, or heavy, add a good layer of
Tommy Topsoil's sandy topsoil - this has been specially produced for the purpose.   A dressing of fertilizer can be incorporated at this stage (Tommy's Own Special Organic Plant Food is recommended).   The soil is then firmed by walking and raking.   Do not use a roller as this can pan the soil which the turf roots have difficulty penetrating.   24 hours before laying the turf, give the soil a very good soaking.
Laying Turf
Start laying the turf down a long straight side - butting the turf closely end to end.   Do not EVER stretch the turf, or leave gaps.   The second row of turf is laid alongside the first row, with staggered joints - like laying bricks with the half bonding system.   After 2 rows have been laid, work off planks - avoid walking on the turf at this stage.   Continue to the end of the job, trimming the turf where required with a kitchen knife or similar.   The turf must be watered once laid, and continue to be watered for up to three weeks twice daily - early morning and evening, if there is no rain.

Ring the office with your measurements and we will work out how much you need.

Turf available for collection, home delivery or delivery to site.
We also offer a laying service - please telephone the office & we'll come out and give you a quote.

Lawn Preparation & Laying

The completed job!

After Care
In dry weather, start watering immediately after laying and do not let turf dry for at least 3 weeks.   Any cracks that appear should be filled by brushing in some sandy topsoil.
Cutting
New laid turf should be clipped after 2 weeks, and thereafter maintained at a height of 1".
When to turf
Turf can be laid all year round - except during a solid freeze, and only with regular watering during a hot dry Summer period.
Feeding
Turf should be fed 2-3 times per year with a liquid plant food, pelleted chicken manure or, fish blood and bone meal.   Then every 2 years, give a good feed of lawn top dressing.   One bag to 10 sq metres, together with 125g (4oz) Calcified Seaweed.
